Let’s Change the Rules of Trade Starting Today

March against MonsantoGlobal trade brings many benefits, but the rules have to be fair. Free trade agreements to date, such as NAFTA, have only benefited those already in power and have been a disaster for millions of farmers and working families in all partner countries.

Right now the US is negotiating two new trade agreements, the content of which is largely secret. President Obama has said these agreements will be different than NAFTA, but rather than release the text, he has asked us to have faith that the corporate lobbyists advising on these negotiations have made them fair.

The key to stopping this process is stopping Fast Track legislation. When Fast Track was taken up in the Senate, some clear signals of discontent were sent, but the bill ultimately passed. Now it is up to the House of Representatives to say No and they need to hear from you.

Today hundreds of organizations are asking their networks to participate in a national call in day. Please call your Representative today with the message, “Vote No on Fast Track.” You can use the number 888-804-8311 and you will have a chance to listen to a few talking points before you are asked to enter your zip code and get connected to your representative. If you prefer, you can call the switchboard directly at 202-224-3121.

You can also email your Representative.

It is not just citizen activists and NGOs who oppose Fast Track. Many fair brands are also speaking out against trade rules that inhibit their ability to build fair supply chains. Pictured is David Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps as he participates in last month’s March Against Monsanto alongside the Stop Fast Track message. Other fair brands that have publicly spoken out against Fast Track include:

 * Dean’s Beans (coffee)
 * Equal Exchange Co-op (coffee, chocolate, tea, fruits, nuts)
 * Maggie’s Organics (apparel)
 * Mata Trader’s (apparel and jewelry)

By supporting fair markets and fair policy, we can change the rules of trade so they work for all of us!

Thanks for your support,
