Certification – a third-party certifier audits the supply chains of specific products from point of origin to point of sale against fair trade criteria. Depending on the certifier they may only certify a specific product or an entire organization and its products.Membership Organization– evaluates organizations for their full commitment to Fair Trade principles and accepts only “100%” fair trade organizations – screening process only, no “on the ground” audit.This chart summarizes the logos of relevant certification programs and membership organizations. A product sold by a company that is a member of a fair trade organization may not have gone through third party certification; conversely, a product certified “fair trade” under a certification program does not mean that the company that produces that certified product is itself a dedicated fair trade company.

AJP - Agricultural Justice Project - link

Agriculture Justice Project (AJP): Food Justice Certified

Food Justice Certified is based on the AJP standards which were developed specifically for North American food system operations. Many social justice labels in the marketplace today, such as Fair Trade, have been developed to meet the needs of small farmers in the southern hemisphere selling to buyers in the northern hemisphere. Food Justice Certified brings the concept of fair trade to the domestic setting.

The AJP standards were developed with extensive input from stakeholders, including farmworkers, food system workers, farmers, certifiers, processors/manufacturers, retailers, and representatives of indigenous populations. Our highly participatory method for creating this program has allowed us to find the gold standard for social justice in our food system that is functional and achievable for all business types.

Additional pieces of our program that sets AJP apart are:

  • Participation of worker representatives in inspections
  •  High percentage requirements for labeling multi-ingredient products promotes transparency to consumers
  • Tiered labeling starting at the farm level and highlighting products certified at both the farm and processor level also improves transparency in labeling for consumer

Fairtrade International (FLO)

Fairtrade International (FLO) is a non-profit, multi-stakeholder association involving 25 member and associate member organizations (labelling initiatives and producer networks), traders and external experts [1]. The organization develops and reviews Fairtrade Standards, assists producers in gaining and maintaining Fairtrade certification and capitalizing on market opportunities.

Fairtrade International is one of the two organizations which resulted from the January 2004 split of Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International into Fairtrade International, the standards setting and producer support unit, and FLO-CERT, which inspects and certifies producer organizations and audits traders.

IMO Fair for Life

“Fair for life” is a brand neutral third party certification programme for social accountability and fair trade in agricultural, manufacturing and trading operations. The programme complements existing fair trade certification systems. Social accountability and fair trade have become important indicators to select business partners in a global market place. Existing systems unfortunately exclude many agricultural, manufacturing and trading operations worldwide that practice social responsibility and fair trade from independent verification and certification of their performance.  The Fair for Life Social & FairTrade Certification Programme offers operators of socially responsible projects a solution for objective inspection and certification by a highly qualified external verifier. It combines strict social and fair trade standards with adaptability to local conditions. The system is designed for both food and non food commodities (cosmetics, textiles etc.).

Small Producers’ Symbol (SPS)

The Small Producers’ Symbol is an initiative launched in 2006 by the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Small Fair Trade Producers (Coordinadora Latinoamericana y del Caribe de Pequeños Productores de Comercio Justo—CLAC), with support from the Fair Trade and Solidarity Economy movements in a number of continents. To guarantee the appropriate use of the Symbol, small producers’ organizations created FUNDEPPO (Foundation of Organized Small Producers), with the aim of ensuring that this Symbol truly benefits small producers, communities and consumers. FUNDEPPO works with skilled professionals and entities to independently and reliably certify compliance with the Symbol’s standards.

Fair Trade USA (formerly TransFair USA)

Fair World Project no longer recognizes Fair Trade USA (FTUSA) as a credible fair trade label. For small producer organizations (i.e. traditional fair trade producers), FTUSA recognizes the Fair Trade International (FLO)  standards and has not developed their own. In this case, we believe that brands should work with FLO directly. For other standards, such as farmworkers on large farms and unorganized producers, FTUSA has developed their own standards, but has ignored repeated requests to dialogue with the larger movement to address serious concerns, for example concerns from small coffee producers that opening up fair trade to large coffee farms will have a detrimental effect on their own operations.

Domestic Fair Trade Association (DFTA)

The Domestic Fair Trade Association is a collaboration of organizations representing farmers, farmworkers, food system workers, retailers, manufacturers, processors, and non-governmental organizations. Internationally, the Fair Trade movement has united farmers, workers, traders and consumers with a message of fairness, equity and environmental stewardship in trade with producers in marginalized countries. Increasingly, we can see that the challenges faced by rural communities are very similar around the world.
