Newsletter 128: Tell Major Restaurants and Grocery Stores That Farmworker Exploitation is Not OK

Take Action for Farmworkers on Fruit and Vegetable Farms in Mexico
The Los Angeles Times recently published the start of a major investigative report confirming illegal, abusive, and unsafe conditions for farmworkers on farms in Mexico supplying fruits and vegetables to US companies including Safeway, Subway, and Darden Restaurants (owner of restaurants like Olive Garden and the Yard House) among others. Under NAFTA, imports of fresh fruits in vegetables to the US from Mexico have more than doubled and most of this is from farms where workers are exploited and underpaid. The report sites lack of public pressure as one factor that allows companies like restaurants and grocery stores to believe they do not need to prioritize oversight.
Fair Trade in Nicaragua
In May we celebrated World Fair Trade Day and as the final step in this celebration, last week FWP and the winners of our video contest went to Nicaragua to learn about fair trade on the ground and meet some of the co-ops Equal Exchange and Maggie’s Organics work with. At Tierra Nueva, the group met not only the primary producers, but also learned about the role of the secondary or umbrella co-op in training producers and advocating for policies ranging from gender equity to organic farming.
